Tiny Gold Clusters As Top-Notch Catalysts Identified By NIST And Partners

For most of us, gold is only valuable if we possess it in large-sized pieces. However, the "larger is wagerer" rule isn't the eccentric for those interested in exploiting gold's exceptional ability to catalyse a wide variety of chemical reactions, including the oxidation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) into harmless carbon dioxide at room temperatures. That process, if industrialized, could potentially amend the strength of catalytic converters that clean automobile exhaust and breathing devices that protect miners and firefighters. For this purpose, nanoclusters - gold atoms bound together in crystals smaller than a strand of DNA - ar the size most treasured.

Using a pair of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) instruments for which spherical aberration (a system fault yielding bleary images) is corrected, researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Cardiff University (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom) for the first fourth dimension achieved state of the art resolution of the active gold nanocrystals absorbed onto iron oxide surfaces. In fact, the resolution was sensitive enough to fifty-fifty visualize individual gold atoms.

The work is reported in Science.

Surface science studies accept suggested that there is a critical size reach at which gold nanocrystals supported by iron oxide become highly active as catalysts for CO oxidisation. However, the theory is based on research victimisation idealized catalyst models made of gold absorbed on titanium oxide. The NIST/Lehigh/Cardiff aberration-corrected STEM imaging proficiency allows the researchers to study the real iron oxide catalyst systems as synthesized, identify all of the gold structures deliver in each sample, and then qualify which bunch up sizes are most active in CO conversion.

The enquiry team observed that size matters a lot - samples ranged from those with little or no catalytic bodily process (less than 1 percent CO conversion) to others with nigh 100 per centum efficiency. Their results revealed that the most active gold nanoclusters for CO conversion ar bilayers or so 0.50.8 nanometer in diameter (40 times smaller than the common cold virus) and containing about 10 gold atoms. This finding is consistent with the previous surface science studies done on the gold-titanium oxide models.

Scars On Broadway follow up debut album with tour

After the double-headed achiever of System of a Down's 2005 releases "Mesmerize" and "Hypnotize," the band went on hiatus, with guitarist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan scene to work on a new project, Scars On Broadway. The latter group's self-titled Interscope debut is set for a July 29 release, and piece there are certainly similarities between the two outfits, this is definitely a new venture.

"I think the main difference is the music," Dolmayan offers. "[Scars is] more rock and song oriented, whereas System is more metal-oriented and schizophrenic, peppy from one style to another." "Scars On Broadway" was recorded at Hollywood's Sunset Sound, and produced by Malakian.

Scars is currently touring Europe through Sept. 21, and will begin an American go in October. Rounding out the total live lineup are guitarist/vocalist Franky Perez, keyboardist/vocalist Danny Shamoun, and bassist Dominic Cifarelli (Pulse Ultra).

"They're all really salutary guys," Dolmayan says. "The most important thing when you're touring is that you enjoy the hoi polloi you're with. Otherwise it can be a selfsame miserable see. You're in close living quarters, and you've got to be around each other a portion. So when you're about people you actually revel, it makes life a lot easier."

With the buzz building around the Scars tracks "They Say" (which also has a video recording) and "Chemicals," there has been much speculation about System of a Down's future.

"Everything is cool," Dolmayan explains. "I hardly hung out with Shavo about a week agone, hung out with Serj about triad weeks agone, we had dinner. The guys are doing great. Of path we support each other in our projects. System will eventually play once more, but right now Daron and I are concentrating all of our energy on Scars, because that's what you have to do to make something into a success."

Post-grunge saturated bikers Crease formed in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in 1994, their rank including three-quarters of a local rig dubbed Excessive. Singer Kelly Meister and brothers Eric (drums) and Fritz Dorigo (guitar) had been performing for several days, and when their bassist left hand the band to capture married, they refocused their get-up-and-go with the avail of new bassist Greg Gershengorn. Changing their send for to Crease, the grouping recorded an main album, Interference, which cemented their local repute. However, when their recording deal felled seam through and through, the band was forced to reorganize, outlay their clip honing their songwriting and performance chops on the South Florida gild scene. In 1997, their EP ...6 Pack Shy of Pretty (which was slated to be a full-length until the striation ran verboten of money) produced a local wireless hit with the single "Thwarting," and various high school profile gigs at home and on the East Coast helped ground Crease a deal with Roadrunner Records toward the destruction of 1999. The 5 songs on ...Six Pack Shy of Pretty were redone for cellular inclusion on Crease's Roadrunner debut, Defense, which was released during the summertime of 2000.

Amy dead in three months?

Amy Winehouses father Mitch says the Grammy-winning singer is suffering from emphysema and he fears she could be dead in three months, usmagazine.com reports.

The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs it wont just ruin her voice, it will kill her, he told UK newspaper the Daily Mail.

Winehouse, 24, was taken to the hospital last week for tests after she fainted at home in London.

With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up, Mitch said. There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. Shes got 70 per cent lung capacity.

If she doesnt get treatment, she could need an oxygen mask to breathe, Mitch told the Daily Mail.

The doctors have said that if she had continued the way she was going she could have ended up an invalid she wouldnt have been able to breathe, he added. If drugs mean more to her than breathing properly, then so be it.

Ellen Degeneres - Degeneres Plans Pre-wedding Trip To Meet De Rossis Family

TV host ELLEN DeGENERES is planning a trip to Australia to meet her fiancee PORTIA DE ROSSI's family - ahead of their planned wedding.

DeGeneres revealed her plans to wed the Australian actress during her daytime show last week (15May08), a day after samesex marriages were declared legal in California.

And now the lesbian couple is hoping to travel to de Rossi's native country, so DeGeneres can meet her grandmother - who won't be able to travel to the U.S. for the wedding.

DeGeneres says, "I've met Portia's mother and her cousins, and I mentioned last night that we should go (to Australia) for Christmas. I can't wait to get there.

"I'd like to get the show there. I'm going to push hard to make that happen."
